I've added nut extensions to a couple of acoustics without any noticeable issues to date...reasonably inexpensive guitars with a variety of tunings and all is well!

While mahogany is called a hardwood, and can vary from piece to piece, it is not that hard of wood really.
There is a lot of force pulling on the bridge and the tension can compress the wood...

I read of someone using tennis racket grip tape...applied pieces for the ball of the thumb, edge of the finger(s) and they raved about how well it worked.
