Ive never done it to a Steel,
but we use to polich air planes
with neverdull then coat it with
glass wax. worked good on them

I have done several mods to mine.
The main one was to the levers.
The were bad about the screws backing
out and falling in your lap.
I drilled them out and built some
capped brass busin ...

I own one i bought in the mid 70s
they are good .
they do need a few mods that are
fairly easy.
I own a bmi 3&5 and a fender 2000
love them all but probably spend
the most time on ...

I you have any desire to the fender 2000
can be made to do what you want it to.
Do a search on them.
It's not that difficult to add knee levers,
and extra pulls.

I built one out of a piece of oak
and painted it black. It works great
Looks Great and was easy to fab.
Took about 15 minutes to build

I done the same thing with a piece of oak.
took about 5 min on the table saw and drill
press.
spray painted it black. looks like it came on it.
Poor boys have poor ways Laughing
