Nice Strat! I used to own a near mint '54 that was #0157, I ended up selling it to Ron Wood for peanuts back in 1975. Not a day passes that I don't think of that guitar.

I've come across that black pitch inside a few Silver Hawaiians before. I think it's some sort of creosote. I removed it by repeated rinsing with hot water and steam.
