The Direct out probably wasn't designed to "power" or drive a speaker. It is usually to send signal to a mixer. A powered speaker could work too.

It's an old Shure P.A. head. If you Google it, there's a bunch of stuff on the net. I think Shure's website has a PDF manual available. From the late 60's.
