Basic shielding will do a good job at preventing electric fields from causing hum/buzz. I find the much more difficult problem is with Magnetic fields. These can penetrate non ferrous metals easily. ...

It's always interesting when your pickup note start on the 2 and the drummer gives you: "one". Smile

Many ways work. The trick is having all band members knowing which method it will be.

I agree. I cant imagine a 5/8" steel rod would sound too good as a 1st string.

Let's use a modicum of common sense, shall we? Rolling Eyes

I've done it both ways and don't feel i'm missing out either way. Sometimes I prefer it more in 1 ear to balance out the drums that are mostly in my other ear.

It may be simpler to point out what doesn't affect the tone, or what affect the tone the least. Like if you play with the lights on or off.. But then the heat from the bulb could be a factor too.
