I can't specifically help with age, but try reading codes on the pots. Google those numbers for potential age.

Another thought, if wiring permits, rotate the pickup 180 degrees--bass to treble, treble to bass. Maybe the balance is better that way.

Until your new socket arrives, try wrapping the leg threads with teflon plumber's tape. That should make it fit tight.
