Depends on your ear and preference. I mic my amp most of the time for recording, and I'm playing a carter starter, so If the mic (SM57 or MD421) is anywhere close to my guitar, you can hear my pedals ...

I've been trying to figure out this intro lick by ear - I'm starting on the 15th fret with A and B mashed into a G chord - the 5th note picked is the 1st string... then you can probably figure it out ...
