I'll second the non slip shelf liner. Cheap and works, just cut a small piece and put it on a knee then lay steel on it. No need to fasten to back of steel guitar or anything.

Do you mean the Grover nut hangs over the edges of the feet board? Like it's too wide?
If so; I would say use it anyway. If you use the Grover nut, I can't imagine the action isn't high enough.

I'll add that I tend to only use open D on Acoustic instruments that are longer scaled then my lap steels.
