If the guitar was functioning correctly and then began to have this issue, you were likely correct in your initial post. Something is binding.

I have tried several suggestions but I have found that Armor All does the best job for me. Spray it on a rag and wipe in on then use a soft cloth to polish it off. YMMV

I put a 15k Clay Alden pickup in mine and it’s great. Check out his site he has several different windings available.

Mullen G2 (traded)

You could cut a slot in it with a Dremel tool then try a flat head screwdriver.

I looked at my changer on my push pull which also has the whole tone raise on the first string and mine is not misaligned that way. So I think there is definitely an issue.
