The "arched metal cover" on a rickenbacker is the magnet. There are two horseshoe magnets, one on the right and one on the left, the coil is located inside the horseshoes. | |

I am not taking any repairs for a while but I would certainly make a standard item like an ultra tone pickup. A P-90 wont fit- wrong pole spacing, wrong mounting holes.

They are humbucking and wired in series, it is unusual for a vintage guitar to have a set of pickups that are humcancelling combined but certainly not unheard of | |

Bob you are corrct- its 20 years but it starts from the time you file so by the time you get the official patent it can vary.

There is alot of confusion about what happened.
there is no patent on horseshoe pickups- patents are only good for 10 years and this was patented in the 1930's. There could be some legal confusion ... |
