Don, when you sit at the steel, which fret does the centre of your body line up with? 12 is obvious, but 15 can help. Your left foot doesn't have to be at right angles to the pedal bar.

I started on a D10 resting my arms on the back neck to play the E9, because otherwise the strain on my back was too much.

You can't go wrong with Buddy Emmons as a starting point. Some players move P8 to the left of P5, and P4 seems to have gone out of fashion somewhat, but his basic setup still makes perfect sense.

The important thing is that adjacent pedals bottom out together. This may mean that the resting heights vary and look untidy. | |

I used to own a no-name copy of a Permanent D10 that had extra cranks welded to the crossbars.
They were a bit of a puzzle but I figured they were for some alternative copedant |

Any C6 course material such as Buddy Emmons' Basic C6.
You soon get used to playing everything a fret higher. I use B6 a lot on songs which are neither jazz nnòr swing. Enjoy! |

My vertical lowers 5 but also raises 9 a half step.
This is to avoid having to use P8 just to raise one string. It has drawbacks but I also have P6 on a lever, so I totally avoid double-footing |
