I use an old ShoBud pedal with a pot and you get very little tone loss through the full length of the pedal. Directly into the amp, the tone loss is major at lower levels of the pedal ...

Can't tell you exactly note for note, but from watching the DVD of "On the Night", Mr. Franklin uses the hammer on and off technique for this lick. Sorry I can't be more precise.
