Thanks everyone, had to use a hacksaw to shorten the not-exactly the same fastener but it is working. Bought the thread lock but haven't used it yet. Question about thread lock- is it like crazy glue ...

Thanks! That was not really enough information to go on. Sorry about that. I live 30 miles or so from the nearest hardware store with any selection of fasteners so was trying to find out ahead of time ...
