Shrink tubing (+2)! Got the idea from Bryan here a while back. It lasts almost as long as the picks do, and rubber is a great cushion that doesn't slip and is easy on the nails.

Many rock and blues songs are based on the dominant 7th. Another great tuning variant from the open tuning 1-5-1-3-5-1 is 1-5-1-3-5-b7 (low to high).
