I finally fixed the tempo problem.  
Zoom R16 did not embed tempo data into the track file.  
Studio One can play tracks without embedded tempo data  ...

I find that playing 3 note chords gives more of an organ sound, 
while playing 2 note chords by omitting the 5th sounds more like strings.  
Playing 4 notes chords can sometimes sound muddy ...
