3 for me as well. There are plenty variations of the compensated 3 barrels as well. Also, there way I see it, all of the classic records I like were made with those "out of tune" teles.

I vote clean it, unless it's peeling and flaking a lot. A played looking original is way cooler than a shiny refinish IMHO... even if it's refinished by the original guy with the original formula lacq ...
