Best of all is to humidify the whole house. Many furnaces have built in humidifiers. Otherwise, humidify the guitar room. If that is completely impossible (doubtful) humidify the case and keep the ins ...

If any lap steel tuning can be called “standard” it would be C6, CEGACE so I’d be inclined to leave that neck alone. I’d use the second neck to experiment on until I found a tuning that comple ...

I recall reading somewhere that he uses a G6 tuning, with the 6 on string 1.
DGDGBE aka Drop DG.

Thanks for some good suggestions. I think my preference is for:

High:
D
B
G
D
B
E (this opens up some nice minor inversions).
Low

I may need a heavier 6th - it's a bit sloppy tuned to E. ...

1) Hit the ground running. Use your Dobro tuning.

2) Learn the de facto “standard” lap steel tuning; C6 (CEGACE)

3) Experiment like a madman, seeking the perfect tuning, while knowing full w ...

Sol Hoopii is great, but I just couldn't seem to "get" his C# Minor tuning. Then I realized it was equivalent to DADF#BD (low to high), almost the same as the open D I know from bottleneck g ...

Are there any other possibilities with C6 strings that won’t break the strings? I try to vary a little to no avail. I guess we have to get separate strings for each tuning? Confusing.

Thanks

You might try going lighter on the bass strings and heavier on the treble strings—within practical limits of course. Also, if you can adjust the pickup height you can try that, especially if it’s ...

Yes, G6 is great.
I use GDEGBD.
On 8 strings its GBDEGBDE.
Works for me.

You’ve inspired me to try something new (to me) Andy;
GDEGBD and DGDEGBD.

As usual, having the 6 in the middle is ...

I don’t own any double necks, but I do own Fender and Rickenbacher single necks.

The Fender gives you that famous twang while the Rick horseshoes give you beef and grit. So IMHO either will be fi ...

Unless it’s for a Weissenborn you can use the same strings you used for open D. They might feel a bit stiff.

I’ve had no problems with Open D on a 22.5” scale. 58-16 strings are great. 60 or 62 on the low D is a bit better. If you find the strings feel too slack just tune up a step to open E.
